Restoran Hua Mui

I've been coming to Hua Mui since I started working in JB, and that was more than 10 years ago. Hua Mui is an old school coffee shop in the hustling Jalan Trus in Johor Bahru. I remember that it used to use one of the old classic cash registers but they changed it to the modern one few years back.

It's actually a 2 storey shop but they closed the upper floor for some renovation so its a bit smaller and packed now.

It opens at 830am but expect a que starting before it opens especially on weekends. Be expected to wait for more than 15 minutes for your food though and on busy days it can be longer.

It's your typical kopitiam that serves kaya toast, half boiled eggs and kopi cham but they are popular for their hainanese chicken chop.

Honestly, don't expect fancy chicken chop as you would expect in a western restaurant, this is just a simple dish of deep fried crusted deboned chicken served with fried potato wedges and peas from a can soaked in gravy, but nevertheless it feels homely and simple, and yes, they serve it even for breakfast! I'm not a fan of their chicken chop as I've had better but my kids love it.

They also have salted egg yolk version chicken chop as well for those who wants a bit of kick. The egg yolk is a bit dry to my liking.

One of my favourite dishes here is the mee mamak. Its not exactly the same as the one you get in a mamak stall, its less spicy and not oily, but it is good compared to the normal mee goreng that they serve and I would recommend you to give it a try.

If you want a rice dish, you could give salted egg chicken with rice a try. As u can see, I seem to love everything salted egg😅 it's filling except that it's rather plain as they don't have any veggies so do order a veggie side dish to go along with it.

Restoran Hua Mui has another outlet in Taman Sutera (spelt Hwa Mui) and it's bigger and has less waiting time. The food tastes the same except that the ambiance is less rustic. So if you're in that area and don't like queing for your food, its better off if you go to the Sutera branch.

Would I come here again? Yes , everytime i feel like having roti bakar and my kids seems to enjoy it here.
